What's your opinion on alt-ing?

One or two characters are enough for me.
I like playing many different characters.
I like many characters including helper alts.

To alt or not to alt
« on: July 06, 2014, 09:44:05 am »
Many suggestions are shot down because "they would encourage alting" but is this really a viable reason?

Personally I don't really see the problem if they're all real characters.

I'm perfectly aware of the fact that many people use alts for convenience or exploitation of features or bugs.
Be it Companionguy, Slaveguy, Muleguy, Minerguy, Scoutguy or Lootguy ...

But where is the problem if I've got a melee char, a sneaker char and small/big/energy guns chars?
They're (hopefully) all viable PvP or PvE characters and they're not used to exploit anything.
Playing characters with different playstyles is fun and sometimes challenging.

So what's your opinion on alts?

You are confusing alting (repair-alt, science-alt, doctor-alt, taxi-alt, miner-alt, barter-alt) with playing different types of characters (sniper, tank, sneaker).

How 'bout the power to kill a yac from 300 yards away...WITH MIND BULLETS!

My point is...this game is a direct carry-over from the original Fallout 1/2, and thus will always be highly prone to alting for whatever reason the player has to do this, compounded by work functions like mining and crafting, then multiplied by whatever role-playing fun we have. In my opinion, if you're not playing multiple characters here, then you're either brand spanking new to this game, or you are getting dangerously close to being bored of it. If that's it, then i say go play outside for a while, and let the game call you back.

Kilgore dismissed several combat related suggestions such as the recent one about explosion damage
because dedicated rocket/grenade launcher builds would "encourage alting".
So I guess Kilgore is confusing it as well then, eh?

And even if he is than what of it, eh?

As for explosion weapons suggestion both original and yours were bad and not needed since (as many people involved in pvp said) rocket and grenade launchers are fine and powerful enough as they are now.
Rocket/grenade launcher is great support weapon and it fits well into current game balance and tactics and there is nothing wrong with characters being able to use it as a second hand item. There is even perk that makes it more useful as primary weapon if you wish to make it such. Btw. I don't get this all butthurt about players being able to use more than one kind of weapon on single character.

Quote
That way you get dedicated explosives builds that aren't great bursters at the same time
and bursters or tanks profit a little less from carrying a secondary rocket or grenade launcher.

More tactics, less dual wield overkill.
It's actually less tactics if you got only specific build composition forced to use certain weapons on the battlefield and there is no way to make some dynamic changes to that during fight. And "dual wield overkill" part is just...  :o

But this is not a topic here...

I only pointed out that this part:

But where is the problem if I've got a melee char, a sneaker char and small/big/energy guns chars?
Is about two different things and there is no problem with having different combat characters because for example good tank can't be good sniper at the same time.

Problem with alting is when certain game mechanics and requirements make particular characters more efficient at doing simple stuff or make them achieve better results, example:
If you character's luck would matter when it comes to sciencing stuff then it would force players to do 10 luck science alts - alting.
If you character's charisma would matter when it comes to selling stuff then it would force players to do 10 charisma barter alts - alting.

Right now I love that I got 1 alt that can mine, barter, repair, science, heal, carry lots of stuff at maximum efficiency, lead small party, have companions/mercs, solo ares/warehouse and on top of that is a good pvp fighting character. I don't get people who need alts for all this.

I'm not gonna split hairs over silly mmo terminology so I'll just ignore your wall of text and agree to whatever you said.

Some people like "pure" characters, not to mention 1 INT ones.

Of course, my "pure" pvp chars are 1 int, anything more than 1 (2 in rare cases) for pvp char is waste of special points :)

I was talking about my multitool character with which I can do all in-game tasks I need and still be able to defend myself if needed to .

I have only one character and I am happy about it. I can do almost everything (even though it has lots of building mistakes)

I wouldn't alt if I could unlimitedly improve my char, but without chips that's not gonna happen, so alts it is...

I personally use two characters, my initial one that's for crafting, mining, etc. Also able to protect himself. Y'know, the usual. The second character is made primarily for pvp/high level pve. It's not easy to have both, and I don't see a problem with having a character for utility and a character for fighting.

i only keep my first char for vendoring and because my main tent is made by that alt. no further reason since a pvp char is mostly capable of doing all other things too.. if you want to mine with a pvp char just give him +ap armor, jet and it is fine.. since there is no level cap you can do utility with almost every char..

so i only have this first alt that is not for pvp/pve.. i still have 3 other ones for different combat purposes :)

I think its nice to be able to make 1 char that is good at all and be able to play to me Especially when starting out. in a game that is already in progress and a lot of good points where made about being able to have that large tool box. I do also agree that to make pvp fun competitive there need to be different builds that can counter 1 another so that's why I always have my bad ass pole and a multi tool when I fish 8). But on that note there seem to be a spit in pvp small and large arms I hope after wipe there is a reason 4 both in all situations PVP
