Make reputation meaningful
« on: December 13, 2013, 08:28:17 pm »
I think that reputation right now is rather useless statistic. The only real advantage you can get for having high reputation is Gunrunners thingy. Other "factions" doesn't give you anything for being "loyal" to them... And reputation drops if it is higher than 200 (or lower than -200), so you have to work hard to gain it. If there are no quest for rep gain, then it's almost impossible to have high reputation at NPC factions.

So my suggestion is:
- Make less factions. It's rather useless to have 3 different reputations for residents of the same city (for example BH ghouls, humans and mutants)
- Reputation shouldn't change over time. You should live with your high/low rep OR reset it at cathedral.
- There should be a way to upgrade your rep up to 0 in each city. You would pay, let's say 1000 caps per 100 reputation gain.
- High reputation should give you some small advantage, similar to Gunrunners workbench (for example: access to special merchant, no need for  Day Pass in VC, access to higher quality slaves at Metzger, cheaper blueprints etc.)
- while your reputation wouldn't change over time, at the same time it should be slightly harder to gain high rep.

I agree and would also add that reputation shouldn't be resetable at all.
Being able to reset your rep makes the whole concept pointless.

If you work hard to gain rep in a certain area you should get some benefits.
If you screw up big time you're an outlaw in that area and get drawbacks for it.

Paying npcs to regain positive rep is a bad idea. People would just abuse it.

You should only be able to change your rep by doing quests.

Reputation as it is now serves absolutly no purpose.

Global idea is great !

Like Sperber, I think pay caps to gain reputaion is not that appropriate.

Maybe there could be two kind of reputation :
-Reputation deacrasing over time but can be easily gained (just like gunrunners)
-New one
Dunno.

Great idea but instead of gaining by just paying. We need more quest for all factions, so there is no need to remove some of them.

Totally for this suggestion, reputation should not be so easily gained and it would effect more to gameplay.

Well, it's sometimes too easy to lose the rep.
For example you mis your rocket and it hits a caravan. So you get reputation loss AND caravan attacks you, so you have to defend yourself and kill them, which generates alot of negative reputation.
And as I said, "buying" rep would work ONLY when you have negative reputation (less than 0). You wouldn't be able to do that on positive rep.
It'd be also quite expensive.
