How to use Lockpicks?

How to use lockpicks?! I know that's a stupid question but I really don't know how to use them.. I put them in my item slot I click on them and then press on a locked box or a locker but it say's "That dose nothing" and that's it.

You put the lockpicks in your active item slot and then you open up your skilldex (press S) and select the lockpick skill

Even tho I didnt know how lockpicks worked that dosent mean I dont know how to use hotkey's so that was kind of insult to me , But thanks for help tho'.
