[Mechanics]Radaway vs Chem Reliant(medium)
« on: September 08, 2015, 12:12:57 am »
I was debating if to post this here or in Suggestions, but decided here because the in-game function does not seem right to me based on the description of Chem Reliant.

So the way RadAway works is on 6-minute intervals. You take a RadAway and you get an immediate 25-point reduction in rads (assuming you have more than that), and this starts an invisible timer. 6 minutes later you get a 50-point reduction from that same RadAway, and 6 more minutes later you get the final 75-point reduction (again assuming you had that many rads).

However, with the Chem Reliant trait, the timer is doubled. It takes 24 minutes, not 12, for a single RadAway timer to complete. Fine, but i don't see anything about the descriptions in-game or on the wiki that suggests this. The Chem Reliant description is like this:

"You are more easily addicted to chems. All drug addictions are permanent, but the drugs effects last twice as long as usual."

This relates to drugs, their addictions and effects. Radiation is not a drug. The description does not appear to relate to incoming radiation damage. So i suggest a fix to the way the RadAway timer works on Chem Reliant characters, or a change to the in-game description and some declaration about it.

As it is now, being Chem Reliant apparently slows down one's metabolism. If that's the answer, then we can change the wiki info about this Trait, but a change to the in-game description would be in order as well.

You're missing the fact that RadAway doesn't have a "Drug Effect" duration per se. Tbh I never noticed it but then again I've got only 1 character with Chem Reliant - it does seem like a bug or at least mis-design though. The only thing that comes to my mind is that it may be annoying in Glow.

I would say it's a matter of word interpretation. For me drug effect of Rad Away is that it takes away radiation. It occurs 3 times in 0min, 6min, 12min with different strength each time. So in other words drug effect of Rad Away lasts 12 minutes, lets call it "it's working in your bloodstream", removing 150 radiation points in total but it does it in 3 steps not in constant way per second/tick like other drugs. So if Chem Reliant makes effects of drugs to last twice as long it seams natural to me that it will also cause Rad Away to deal with your radiation twice as long as normal.

IMHO twice as normal should be 0, 6, 12, 18, 24 with 25 first, 50 on 6 and 12, and 75 on 18 and 24 or 75 on last three radiation reduction.

It's a trait, so it has to have some disadventges...

Yeah, i know but main disadvantage of drugs was addiction and penalty to max ap. Removing it after wipe, for me, is a temporary change but i dont know what devs have plans about it. If penalty dont come back after wipe, RadAway can works as now.

In deed, this was after i went to Glow with a Glow-specialist who has Chem Reliant.

Compare this with the Fast Metabolism trait. I would need to test it to be sure, but i believe a Fast Met character going to Glow has his own serious problem. Rads dmg him twice as fast, but RadAway works twice as fast too. The timing is tighter but maybe he can do his work and exit the Glow with low rads.

However, Chem Reliant is not at all described as "Slow Metabolism". And anyway, the rads don't affect him half as fast to compensate. So what we have with Chem Reliant is the same speed for rads, but half the speed for the cure. Yes, this makes Chem Relaint a very bad trait for Glow. If Chem Reliant is like Slow Metabolism, then the rads would be slow too.

Possible Fixes
* Change the wording so it's clear, or
* Slow down the rads on Chem Reliant chars to match the drug effects half-speed, or
* Add additional intervals as suggested by OldBoy above (i like it), or
* Do nothing, and invariably we'll see this same topic every so often when someone else has this same problem, probably at Glow.

Radaway could just be reworked to be one time use like Stims. Taking away 100/400 rads at a time. No one who prepares dies from radiation anyway so making radaway insta use eliminates any timer issues.

That is a bad idea. While mobs in glow are dangerous, no one can stay in Glow for a long period of time. This is due to the constant radiation building up. Making radaway work instantly would remove that.

Anyway the issue that has been posted is likely an unintended effect, but then again. Chem reliant is a TRAIT.

I thought you could just inject yourself with enough radaway, and Rad-x to stay for as long as supplies last. It'd just make things more convenient since you won't die from the rads either way.

It could work at once kicking out from your body 100-200 rads at once (not always same number, just like stimpaks) and after that it will start somekind of timer/cooldown just like drugs so taking another dose will be avaiable after 20 minuts will pass.

Nah!

It's far better for building up the suspence during the action within the Glow. Makes you think fast.

-Take it now or on the next floor?
-How long time passed? Is it efficient to use another now?
-Isn't it too late for another one? (i'm starting to glow!)
-Dose has no effect?! Already taken this much? My skin is falling off!
-Will i make it to the surface before i become a pool of liquid shit?

Seriously i think it's brilliant the way it is now :)

EDIT: i think chem reliant should slice in half the intervals of radaway. Not prolong them by 100%.
