Skill Points Over 99
« on: August 11, 2014, 02:59:39 pm »
Hi there,

I noticed a major problem about skill points which I did not see mentioned before.

With one of my characters, I was saving up skill points because I was undecisive about which skill I would spend them in.

This resulted in the points going over 99 and since this game is based on Fallout 2, I thought the skill points would add up while still showing 99. Mistake!!!

Skill points, once they go over 99 in the counter are lost. Might be something to check out or be careful about if you are unaware so I just thought I would mention it.

Of course, the simplest solution is to just spend them as they come or before reaching 99.

Hope this helps.

Known "feature", probably hardcoded. We would need 3 digits to avoid this.

Agree with jacky. Why would one not spend points and just collect them?

This is very easy to do with a PvE character that has 8-10 IN. I've done it. I'd like to see it fixed.

Yeah, that would fix it.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies (mine is a bit late, sorry ::)).

Indeed, the addition of a 3rd digit would be a great fix for this.

Agree with jacky. Why would one not spend points and just collect them?

As I said, I was undecisive as to which skill to invest in next and since this char was an experimental build, I was waiting to get a bit more level to see which skill would be most appropriate.

I'm not quite understanding your comment. What is that "bot" you're mentioning?  ???

I have to say that I believe this derp. one does indeed hoard skill points due to uncertian specifications concerning ones build.

btw, http://forum.fonline-reloaded.net/index.php?topic=3745.0 any way you utilize hardware like this ingame is considered botting, and it is against the rules, if it affects the server directly, i'm not sure if it's legal in the confines of ones tent.

Yes and no.

Max value for unspent skill points is defined in scripts, and (iirc) no limits are applied by engine (unlike for example SPECIAL, which still have hardcoded 0-99 range), so one could just remove that and be happy with that.

Thing is, even if you do that, client will always display only first 2 digits of this value (for codemonkeys: sprintf("%02d")), thanks to fact that drawing character screen is still hardcoded - in the end it would be even more confusing for users. You could try and draw the number from scripts, and it should work (unless i missed some sneaky stuff), but i think it's here mostly to mimic Fallout behaviour where such limit existed.

Hoarding SP is not a (real) problem here, lack of ingame information about limit is :)

Exactly, but i still dont understand why to dont just spend it. Btw something much more important is that if you dont choose perk until next "perk level" it will suffer. For example if you get perk on lvl 3 but you aint sure what to pick, you can just close the board and spent SP. Hoever if you dont choose the perk until reaching lvl 6, you will lose perk... GG  :D
