How to tell hostiles from neutrals?

I've only been playing this game for a few days so I don't know to much.
I found a random encounter with rangers fighting slavers, I helped the rangers win the fight by killing a slaver, I thought I could just loot the bodies afterwards but the rangers killed me right after. How can I tell friend from foe?

You can loot, but you need to be patient :D

To be precise you need to wait for surviving party to gather loot from random corpses AND THEN you may lot the rest

Level up a bit and kill them too this time for stealing your shit from guys you killed yourself so you earn your hard earned loot from their cold dead hands  8)
