Some help for a new one?
« on: January 15, 2020, 01:45:26 am »
First I want to say I am very happy that this game here exists. Fallout3 and plus just never got me really. I loved F1 and F2 the way it was.

Still I seem to have very much trouble here. For example: My character is level 21, wears combar armor and helmet Mark 2 and a quality plasma rifle with almost 200 EW skill. For me that sounds like a good gear to get some fight. I took the easy NRC raider quest and wow.. what the hell is wrong with raiders here? They all hit me in the eyes almost every hit for 100+ damage and I just wonder. Am I doing anything wrong? Is my character just too weak or that gear nothing worth?

In general I have the feeling combat is not very much worth. If I compare the hub rat quest (few XP, almost no pay) to what amount of XP and money I can make with just running around and salvage and then sell some basic crafted stuff, salvaging seems to be much more of a way to come forward.

So hmm am I missing something?

Is there any way to find some fighting (missions) with equal or a bit weaker enemies that pays off? Or is fighting just nothing a solo char should do at all (unless for some rats and geckos I guess :D)

Maybe someone can give me a little bit of advice here? Thanks :)

That's how the wasteland is, Bluesuit!

Other ex-vault dwellers reported about some rookie raiders group up along the highway near Junktown, ask the JT scout captain for directions, I'm sure you can handle them solo.
There were report about the Gun Runners loosing their package to some Super Mutant fledglings with big guns. It's not without danger, but usually Mutants aren't too smart. You can hide around the corner and shoot them while they try to get close to you. Talk to Marshal about job opportunities at mercenary level, he'll tell you more.
If still in trouble, use Radio channel 0 to find other vault 24 members for help.

Also, did you forger to update your pip-boy? Bah.. Never mind. We will be sending out mass updates tomorrow. The new design will cheer you all up!

Don't forget to visit us at Lander's Point and bring some scrap metal with you, we are all out.

Yes, your fighting capabilities should be pretty okay so far, although they depend on amount of health, perks and damage resistance also.
If you are going to be a strong fighter, consider these factors:
-Health pool should be around 180-250. Just so you won't get one-shotted and have time to use stimpacks (get money for superstims as fast as possible).
-Gun skill is not the only thing required to be a fighter (btw ~200-250 is enough). Pay attention to perks and find a balance between health and damage output (with just 8 perks, cause thats maximum). Pay attention to doctor and first aid skills as well. Outdoorsman can help you avoid unwanted encounters.
-Dont hesitate to use stims. If enemy is dealing damage fast enough to keep you busy with healing, better go away.

Talking about enemies, quests and dungeons. Yes, that is a fact, there are plenty of unbalanced quests and enemies in this game in terms of effort/profit correlation. NCR raider quest is one of the shitiest one (some people say that other difficulties are more fitting although). You have to figure out which one of them you can handle, because there are good ones as well. And if you see that it doesn't worth it - go find another one.

Gun runner's mutant quest mentioned above is better for a group or high level skilled fighter.
Some quests also offer managable fights. Some quests don't even require fighting at all, for instance water merchants offer caps for delivering crates all over the world map, or you can find lone wanderers in bars or town squares, who offer caps for escorting them to certain location (some party points to get them into group are needed though).
Caravans are (in my opinion) the most solid way to make caps through fighting. Just wait for caravan to stop in a town, join it and you will encounter a series of pretty balanced fight encounters and have some NPC caravan guards on your side to help, even other players can join it as well. Although don't hesitate to leave caravan fight if it gets too hot and I'd advise to avoid LA - San Francisco and Broken Hills - New Reno routes. First one is just too long and it is hard to keep caravan leader alive all this time. Second one includes high level NPCs with combat armor, but it is very profitable if you manage to kill them, because they drop Combat Armor Mk2 and some decent weapons and ammo.

Thanks so far for all of your answers :)

I will consider some of that for sure.

I started over and will try to find a way.

Captain Stone: What exactly is up with that Pipe Boy updates? Can you tell me more about that? And what about Landers Point?

Maxron: Caravans are solid, yes. Sadly often there come enemies that shoot at me and hit me in the eyes and faster then I can look I go down. Still, I like them for sure :)

Jbarros: My Crafter (as far as I can tell him that) is named Nimiria and my new Soldier, Nightsteel, will go for some missions and fights in the next days, often near the Hub for selling and such :)

Pipboy update is just a 'new' interface, that is more usable than default. Nothing else, if you like how default works, no need to do anything.
Landers Point is tutorial/starting zone, Captain Stone is the guy handling all the newcomers.

good luck on your missions :)
