What do you mean? You died while killing the rats, or on the way back to the location where you were given the quest?

died killing the rats at the farm, ran back to pick up my gear at the farm, finished up killing them.

Are you certain that you killed all of them? Especially the one behind the curtain that people mostly forget?
Did you get the message 'You killed all the rats on the farm'?
