why does the compact client require fallout 2 disc?

Bc that is what compact means. You do not have all the data on your hard drive to save space.

I am guessing with the compact client you can't play fallout online as well as everything even main story from the disc fallout 2?

I don't know, I never tried, I got no issues with space.
