Good idea might be to add new workbench => cooking pot, and possibility to fix/cook new consumables. To get the ingredients players can hunt for monsters (as they usually do). Every second or third of mobs would carry meat or eggs (for example rat meat, pieces of mantis, radscorpion eggs). Then bring this things to tent/base and craft food like bramin steak (fa.: gives +10 carry weight for 6 hour), scrambled radscorpion eggs (gives poision resistance) and so on..
All bonuses from eating [beyond the immediate treatment or a small premium to the healing rate] should last for no more than 6h and be associated with some minor effects (increased weight capacity, resistance to poison, one sequence) never with SPECIAL cause it is too much of stimulants in this game.
