I just bet you already escaped from the sandstorm hole of death before you got to read this, but just in case you're still stuck in there...
Mouse-over the ladder until you see the Hand icon, at which point click the ladder. Your sandstorm damnation should end at that time as you escape from the hole of death only to emerge topside as a new slave to the wasteland. You may consider going back into the hole of death, but don't look back because you cannot mine any iron ore in the hole of death, and we all know this game is all about the mining so...yeah just go go go.
Oh and before you leave that starting grid, talk to those guys south of the tent. You can get your first 50 xpoints before you even leave there, grab a free water bag, and get an easy quest from the caravan leader to deliver a message.
