I personally don't trust the banks at all, i think my money is safer in my tent. Thie NPCs and building could be used for something else.

But that gives a grossly unfair advantage to earlier players; "Hey, you weren't playing that first year so no interest for you!"?
Lower the interest, but don't get rid of it entirely...
And expand the banks to every settlement. Carrying caps even from Gecko to Vault City is a hassle, at very least. Who Carey's 20 million caps? I wouldn't...
