Title: The Community of FOnline
Post by: Gimper on June 17, 2016, 07:06:46 pm
It all started in 2008, on FOnline:2238, earlier known as "Factions Mod". From the very start, this fan-made MMO had a very diverse player-base. There were players from Poland, Russia, the Americas, and many other places. This diversity caused quite a bit of friction between players, and eventually caused them to split apart into country oriented factions.

In 2009, there were factions made up almost entirely of Polish, French, Russian and American players. It was rare to see mixed ethnicities inside factions. By this time, there were already other FOnline servers released. The division of players was quite similar on these servers as well.

At some point, the Russian players had enough of the racism and intolerance on these servers, so they made their own. The server "FOnline: Requiem" was released in late 2010. This was a fully translated Russian server. This caused a domino effect of other servers popping up from the ashes. There was FOnline: Desert Europe, FOnline: Australia, FOnline: Ashes of Phoenix, and many others.

As time went on, FOnline: 2238 died, and the players realized that they had killed it. With all the separation, the server had no one left to support it. At this point, everyone realized that 2238 was the starting point, and they missed it.

With the realization of players, that separation is weakening the community, FOnline reloaded was released. Released in 2013, this server was well on its way to be the great melting pot. Factions of ALL races were born here. Not everyone got along, but at least it seemed there was not much more racism and racial separation.

2014, a new year, a new session. With a fresh wipe of the server, everyone seemed to be excited and ready to play together. About a week into the session, the Legendary Polish faction "Bang Bang Smash" appeared from nowhere. They began claiming all the towns, and were soon the faction in Power. This caused quite a stir up, because the Administrator of FOnline: Reloaded was once a member of BBS. Kilgore, the admin, was accused of cheating for BBS and helping them become stronger than they should have been that early in gameplay.

Not long after the accusations came the racism of Polish players. After everyone thought the separation and racial classifications had come to an end, it rose up like a Deathclaw on jet. Soon after that, another faction, "The Ultra Violence" rose up. And since they were made up of numerous Hispanic players, they were soon known as "The Mexicans". These poor souls were ridiculed and mocked for years, even though they were a decent faction.

As time went on, 2014...2015...2016, no one tried to make it better. The anger and hostility towards one another fueled the PvP and activity in-game. There was even a section on the forum created "Forum PvP". This kind of behavior became encouraged by even the developers of the game. A quote from one of the devs "It’s a post-nuclear wasteland, what do you expect people to act like?"

The racism and hostility towards one another is at an all-time high in 2016. The Community in all FOnline servers are equally toxic towards one another, and it seems to be accepted now. It's almost as if it has became part of the game itself. Like... You're SUPPOSED to act this way towards one another. It has became a natural feel to watch your back and prepare your best insults while playing FOnline. And as wrong as it may seem, hating each other is almost what makes the game fun. With the small community we have on Reloaded, everyone gets to know everyone. And we learn what makes each other tick.

This is why we find ourselves on this game. It's just our kind of neighborhood. When there are no rules, no filters, and plenty of ammo to blow people away with, what more could you ask for?

                                                                                                                                                                          -Khan Overlord, Gimper

I actually discussed this subject with a Khan legend in a (yet) unmixed podcast today but truth is this kind of free environment we have here is rarely found anywhere these days, it's either bashed out of heavily moderated games or it's destroyed with wordfilters or built away with game design. More and more old enemies turn into old pals as the months goes by and the slurs and hate kinda becomes inside jokes, still hate all newcomers though, fuck those guys. Nice chronicle Gimper, food for thought o/

Thanks man! I hope the community on all FOnline games stay this way. It's actually the only game I can think of where you can get away with this stuff. I mean, where else can you call somebody a nigger and not get banned? Anyways, I just figured I would sit here at work at write this on company time. It's either this, or fix computers. Forget computers.

Yup, things change fast in the wasteland and thats why I don't understand players who hold a grudge against other players for switching factions. It is how fonline is, one day a friend, the next an enemy.

I should have probably mentioned in the write up. There is always that one group like Awkhansky. "We are good guys, we have only friends, we like peace."

Lol its not a bad thing, just an obsolete thing. There is no such thing as good/respectful factions on this game anymore. The time for that has passed, and its only getting worse... or should I say better?

Oh but you got me all wrong my sweet sweet Gimp. We have no friends, and that is the point. Most of factions can't stand us coz we do not fuel their toxic flame, and there is nothing more satisfying for me than someone butt hurting on me, that gets nothing but simple chitchat. I don't take any pleasure in urinating on fallen nor calling ppl noobs. So i don;t do this, with one exception of one particular Klingon player we all know ;). But non the less it gives me pleasure to be nice to rude ppl. As old saying goes "Do not get in a argument with an Idiot. He will pull you down to his level and defeat you with experience"

As true as that may be, my point isn't that people like you don't exist. My point is, that behavior no longer belongs on this game. There should be no "knights in Shining armor" in a Post-Apoc wasteland. It takes away from the role play. In this enviornment, it should be a wastelander-eat-wastelander world.

It's good that you like to be nice and happy irl, many people do. BUT in this world, it's a whole different ball game. From the start of FOnline history, good guys get shat on. It only makes sense that you would turn bitter and hateful towards others.

Point is I like killing players, but i know i can do this. When i am sober i find no pleasure in killing someone that have no stuff i could use... ergo i don't need his shit, and i do prefer peeing in to the toilet even one without water in it more than i prefer peeing on a body of some poor soul. I agree wasteland is harsh, still when I got all i need and i can;t spent it i don't need more shit which is broken most of the times.

If it is an issue You can think of me as a New California Republic Brahmin Rancher with a lot of land. I have all i need and i don't need to kill scrubs... But if you touch my shit You will feel the burn ;)

My point is we Can't all be Kingpins

Well it's not a game by itself, it's just pure humanity robbed from manners, good tone and all that political correctness shit. We are toxic and rude savages, fonline is just a tool that let us realese it and express. Great post Gimper, things just got worse.

Was FOnline 2238 available in 2008? I always think it started in August 2009 as open close. Well nice topic, nice history of the FOnline itself.

Community would change if we wanted it. But we do not want. Even simple shoot on sight makes this toxic behavior. Yayayaya, wasteland blablabla harsh, noob go play hello shitty, blabla.

Never ending trolling and toxic... Grab this all toxic and throw away to Toxic Caves.

I'm not for or against it, but I wouldn't be surprised if the "Fuck you, deal with it." mentality of the community is kind of what keeps a decent amount of players away from playing FOnline.

I'll chime in as a noobie who got cleaned out by Necrosis yesterday.

You're gonna find toxic communities in every game. I dont think thats an issue. The big problem I see is that you're unable to avoid getting killed by other players at the start of the game. There's no amount of skill you can possess to fend off a dude with a rocket launcher that wants to kill you. Compare this to dark souls or something where if you die, its your own fault. In this, you're still trying to figure out the basics of the game while getting steamrolled by other players. If youre gonna tell me to run around in town doing fetch quests, then that right there is the reason nobody sticks around. The first thing I did was start running around in the wastes because that's more fun. And I was promptly murdered. Several times.

Now I wouldnt want to request anything be changed, because the brutality of the game is what makes it so refreshing. Just figured I'd throw in my viewpoint.

Other than that, this is one of the most fun online experiences I've had in a while playing with a couple friends. See you guys around. Ill be the one doing the murdering soon.

I still remember OBT3 start in August 15th of 2009. :D I was eagerly waiting in a Steam chat room with people from 4chan who referred to themselves as "Bros". I had no idea what 4chan was at the time. In the beginning there were 600-800 players on average everyday. The first time the server got up the lags were terrible and rollbacks were plenty. It took a couple of days to fix this mess but after that it was golden. Actually Bros were pretty big in the very early days, they terrorized the server and the innocent NMA* roleplayers. They had two things going for them: numbers (there was like 30 of them active non-stop) and no established meta. Around the end of september when meta started crystallizing (drugged BG tanks ofc), it was too much for Bros and their short attention span. Keeping up with the builds, doing all the calculations, making a dozen of alts, that was too much and they got back to their japanesu graphic novels. By the end of september their reign was well finished, some remnants still play to this day but they dissolved among many different factions. A Czech gang called VSB was also active around this time, they lasted much longer but they vanished eventually as well. I don't remember when BBS founded but I remember a long-lasting reign with ALL the towns captured.

*No Mutants Allowed forums had a 2238 section for a while, they took it down after the first wipe I believe. There was a lot of rage there about "Fonline not being Fallout". Today it would be a goldmine for stories and screenshots, I don't know if they still have it in the archives.

For better or worse, FOnline Reloaded is one of the most hardcore MMOs I've found. I've met a lot of people, taught a lot, and made surprising friendships... or just temporary alliances. As one of the few White Knight players in the game (and also one of the dirtiest - I'm saving that for the next issue of The Weekly Charge) I like to think I make this game a friendlier place.

What do you think, dedne?

I do not know about NMA archives but still you can read 2238 archives in fodev forums http://fodev.net/forum/index.php/board,55.0.html ;) Good old times, I only wonder what happen with 2238 game masters like Izual, Surf Solar. i think what some folks conflate as racism, is actually nationalism.
both suck.
especially in the days of the "internets".
i would have to say that a lot of the "nationism" on this site is from my fellow countrymen from the USA.
the majority of which, have never been outside of their own country.
i am willing to bet that in a country like indonesia, 250,000,000 souls, have more passports than americans.
not per-capita, just pure numbers.

in america, if its not on the TV, it didn't happen.
donald trump is on the TV.
has been for decades.
once the barrier between news and truth was knocked down in the USA, in the 90's, foul folks like him were given power.
rupert murdoch created newscorp (fox news).
newscorp has been sued many times for lying.
and won every lawsuit with the defense of not being news, but opinion.

fox and trump are not buddies.
but fox created the toxic environment that permitted trump to prevail.
it took decades, but here is america, in this election cycle.
thanks fox news.
 :facepalm
careful what you fucking wish for america.

another american tradition is to shoot what you don't agree with.
i sure hope this doesn't happens to trump.
i hope he will do it to himself.
at least i have hope.
while his foot is in his own mouth, i can only pray he shoots himself in the foot.
and misses.
but not by much.

that boy scares the absolute fuck out of me.
the thought of such a small minded person having the launch codes to america's vast insane arsenal, should scare the fuck out of all reasonable human beings on the planet.

after the 2004 american election, the headline for the london times was..... HOW CAN 50MILLION PEOPLE BE SO STUPID.
i never want to hear that again.
anyway, sorry to get political in my countries upcoming election.
but...
when america farts, everyone smells it.
and if you think the racism is bad in this community now, wait if trump wins.
at least seth macfarlane's racisms are satire and try to make fun at absurd shit, but at least seth points this bullshit out while showing how absurd it is.
and not use it as way to get power.
only ratings.
just like the donald.
SETH MACFARLANE FOR PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD!!!!
seth would be better than trump, but not as good as many others.

rant concluded.
time to kill some NPC, loot their stuff, and make more caps, to buy some implants.
enjoy folks.

Well, no extreme ideology is safe. No matter if it's nationalism  or some kind of stupid euro tolerance which ends as France concert night.

Being proud of your nation, country etc, fighting, working and making your country a better place is nothing bad. Especially when you put your country's case on the first place, above other's.

Btw. Keeping your race clean from mixing isn't a nad thing also, except you are ignorant who doesn't like diversity and different cultures.

I  have no problem with talking, dealing etc with other nations, races etc.
But mixing nations/races and cultures is like a fuckin suicide. Imagine, that one day you woke up and everyone is looking the same. Everyone has the same religion, culture, skin colour, language gathered under the same shitty flag. We are all grey apes without colourful history, without challenging and interesting  present time and the worst thing meaningless and pointless future except getting richer and fatter. For me it would be disgusting, disgrace for humanity. Holocaust on your own nation, same thing as occupants do to beaten tribes but we do it to ourselves.

That's how I see global village, overblown tolerance and all of that mixing culture shit.
As you can see being nationalis/racist doesn't mean being stupid short sighted redneck, it can also means you see far. Even farther than all of those "modern" and "wise" politicians, celebrities and other shit that flow with water that someone had flushed in toilet.

Yet there were still those who stayed on 2238 despite Jovanka's updates which have mostly contributed to 2238's death. But with each update it has become worse. Whom to blame ? Those who play or those who do updates ?

What a bullshit. Almost everything you wrote is just a nostalgia. You are trying to explain low online of fo servers from emotional view. The truth is that most of fallout community is quite aged, you will rarely see someone 18- playing games like fallout 1 \ 2. And with age you are getting lesser and lesser time for games. Those who got family are barely having any time to even meet with friends. And since there is no way you can force younger players to play an old 2d game, then it becomes obvious why servers have low ammount of players. Sometimes you have to move on, deal with it. And stop typing bullshit about violence,

Violence solves everything

Violence to end the violence

Those who got family are barely having any time to even meet with friends. And since there is no way you can force younger players to play an old 2d game, then it becomes obvious why servers have low ammount of players. Sometimes you have to move on, deal with it. And stop typing bullshit about violence,

That's the point. Nostalgia is what it's all about. Roleplay and history. Its... How did Jim Varney say it? "Your World As I See It."

Post by: Mistake on June 29, 2016, 07:43:01 pm

And thus, with promises of a wipe, the players of reloaded were filled with excitement. Bases were cleaned, deals were made, and caps once again became valuable with the ability to buy certain implants.

Alas, the days grew longer and the players grew weary, no wipe was to be found. The terms "wipe" and "soon" became more of a joke than ever before, and players began to leave the server. The population plummeted, and other servers became more populated. The developers gave their empty promises, and these words seemed to seal their fate.

Legend has it that there is still some truth to be held in these words, but it will take a long time to find out. Keep dreaming and hoping for a wipe, for someday it may come... or someday, reloaded will share the same fate as the legendary 2238...

God speed travelers, and may you find a more suitable home among the many wastelands.

The remaining factions of Reloaded continued to have small skirmishes between one another and even among themselves. Internal struggles and drama began causing the lesser factions to crumble, with some even giving their ONLY members the boot.

The Reloaded wasteland air became even more stale than before. Without mention of wipe for months, players just didn't know what to do. Down heartened, upset, and overall bored with Reloaded, many wastelanders decided to quit. Others decided to jump to other servers....

This was until.... The Wipe was once again brought to attention! This time, it was promised to be CLOSER than EVER! "99.5% finished" promised the devs, hoping to keep the remaining players within their grasp. This little glimmer of hope was enough to revive the spirit of the community for a bit longer, potentially holding their interest for another week.

The sly dev corrosive is a deceitful one though... Some say he tells these lies just to watch the pained faces on the players when the wipe is delayed even further... What a sadist.

Many say "Rumor of the wipe is just a way to not lose players to another server" Others say "The server will be dead before wipe, and then there will be no need for one." No one truly knows when it will happen or if it will happen. All we can do is gear up, and rough it through the wasteland.

Confirmed: 336= new dialog files added since Season 2! What does the rest of the crew have in store? Find out on "Wipe Soon!" Poland's favourite game for fashionable trolls!

I'm just lucky that I get to see all the content first! Muahahahah! Only had to invest 1/3 of my free time though... feels like I've been playing Fonline solo in a constantly evolving world. At least when we finally release the source after a few years it'll make for a great single-player adventure!

Honestly though, playing it with my friends is amazing. Feels like we're strangers in a living world that's looking at us like we're freaks. It doesn't feel lonely anymore being in towns or cities. Your character makes friends lol, there's always something to see, do, or re-visit. Hell, I love spending time listening to the lounge singer, or watching the comedian.

Sometimes I go to church and get yelled at by a creepy priest... sometimes a creepy priest tries to pay me to murder children...

Often enough though... I hang out at the casino and spawn caps... then I blow them all and fokken spawn some more...

Then I go back to the lounge singer, then spawn some more caps...

I made a few pornos too.

There. I did my part. No more info from me. I'm going to be going silent for a few days maybe weeks. I'm tired of working my ass off for nothing. The majority of you don't believe a word I say, and I'm not allowed to post screens. So... enjoy the darkness. I sent a message to the devs to be more active. With any luck Kilgore or DocAN will show up to answer questions, or ban me for revealing too much info.

Being a voice in the community often at times is fun, but the majority of the time it's pretty lame. Please enjoy the other servers until the official wipe messages are here. There's a ton of other servers you guys can play on. Don't rely so much on Reloaded.

Over all these months I've revealed enough hints at what the server is going to look like. If you get wipe impatient feel free to search my Username and read all my messages. I wasn't joking.

Good luck! Hopefully will see you all in Fonline Reloaded Season 3!

Thing is, and I'm not criticising, you guys missed a big opportunity here. Sure, season 2 might be awesome and all as you put it, but it's a small community, we already read what you said. What about the people that don't play the game or even heard of it at all?

You missed the opportunity of creating HYPE. And no, you don't create hype by having the voice of the dev team give hints to the internal forum of the community. We already know the wipe is coming, at least all the people that stop by even once a week or a month.

But anyone who even enjoyed Fallout 1 or 2 and has no idea this exists might never will if not for the players sharing it from time to time. Not to put any pressure, but hell, you can try having a social media page to try and expand. Have an official youtube where you could have posted mini "Update" videos before wipe.

Things like that just generate hype and will make releasing it so much more interesting than it would be if you released it tomorrow.

Let's be honest, if you release it tomorrow, all the people that once played or continues to play Reloaded will be back, and new people will come slowly with time.

Having generated hype, it would have been mostly new people and some veterans.

Just some suggestions, nothing else. I know you guys are really bussy with all the work and I personally am still waiting for the new season with high hopes.

Good luck.  ;)

The season hasn't changed yet? So I still have my oil rigs, and like 1K set of Desert CA near the HUB xD?

Just on the forums for a bit, I might play Fonline again, but tbh X-Piratez is the game for me atm xD!

And so, once again the percentages of completion were thrown around freely like monkey feces. Players were let down once more. With this, some finally decided to move on. Some found shelter in FOnline 2. Some moved to Requiem, to enjoy the intense gun fights. Some even moved back into the grueling slave camps of TLA MK2.

Some weeks went by, without so much as a peep about the wipe. But suddenly, out of the Ashes of Reloaded, a new PvP faction rose up and began laying waste to the remaining factions. The Armageddon Army began its siege, capturing towns and annihilating Social Warriors, The Muhosransk City, The Khans, and the scrap remnants of the Ultra Violence.

People were outraged and news began to spread to those who had already left Reloaded. Some ignored the news, but most players saw this as an opportunity to return and get some fun out of the server for a bit longer. Action peaked on Reloaded and it became more alive than it had been in over a year.

Now players know whenever they log on to Reloaded, they can always find action. Some say this will keep the players anchored in Reloaded until wipe. We can all only hope that the wipe isn't too far away...

According to my team of statistic analysts, the best chance of hype was during the Fallout 4 pre-release hype. But it's never too late and hype generators will be running before wipe for sure.

I wanted to wipe before Fallout 4 because F4 stole a lot of my ideas. Now, when wipe comes out you'll ACCUSE ME of stealing ideas. Well, fuck you! I came up with all the ideas FIRST.

Fallout Shelter? I was working on FOnline: Shelter and the Player Farm WAY before that APP came out. Fucking Bethesda has 0 creativity now a days and has to steal ideas from the community. Well, they can hire me, or GTFO.
